Learn to Love Golf First

Parents, when it comes to introducing juniors to golf there’s an old saying that I believe is critical for creating life long players: “Teach them to love the game first and learn the game second.” Too often, parents start their kids in golf with a focus on the golf swing mechanics. Kids struggle and don’t really understand what it is they are supposed to do, and therefore don’t have fun. Because of this, they don’t want to continue playing the game. I believe the best way for kids to start golf is in a group setting with other kids closer to their age and skill level. In the group classes, there is time for learning how to hit different shots and skills, but there should always be time to play games and have fun as well.

Don’t get me wrong, kids should be directed on how to get better; but, also be given time to figure it out for themselves. When you take your child to the range for the first time, hand them the club and let them try to figure out how to hit without any help from you (unless they ask for help). If they do ask, help them and get out of the way. There is no need to add more to their minds than what they asked for help with. If they want to try crazy shots – like a driver off of the ground – do not discourage it. Allow them to try whatever they think up. I’ve seen parents discourage kids from hitting shots off their knees or trying the “Happy Gilmore.” Believe it or not, these are great ways to develop speed and clubhead awareness. Plus, they are fun and will have your child wanting to come back to the range and practice. Remember, when it comes to kids you want them to first fall in love with golf before you try to force them to learn it.
